Another one bites the dust - South Africa trip cancelled

This time next month I was supposed to be in South Africa on a trip of a lifetime.

Safari in Kruger

Knowing I have to pace myself now when I travel, my globetrotting buddy Vicki and I did our best to restrain ourselves however we still managed to book:

  • a 3 night safari in Kruger
  • a 6 day overland tour to Mozambique, Lesotho and Swaziland
  • 5 nights in Cape Town with tours up Table Mountain and to Robben Island
  • 2 nights in Franschhoek - wine country
  • 1 night at Hermanus to see the whales migrate

And that's us taking it easy!

Like all the other holidays planned for this year, this one has been cancelled as South Africa's borders are still closed to foreigners.  With the cancellation just being confirmed it's now taking me hours on the phone to try and cancel reservations and request refunds.  😖

Sadly the company we booked our safari through has gone into liquidation so we now have to try and get the money back through the credit card Section 75.  I have no idea how to contact South African Airways for one of our domestic flights - their London office phone line isn't in operation and none of their email addresses work. The same for internal codeshare Kulula/BA flights.  Kulula is currently under business rescue and you can't make head or tail of their website.  When I enter the booking references on BA.com it doesn't recognise them.  I've tried calling BA up but like South African Airways they're not taking any calls.  It's so frustrating and time consuming.

I'm desperate for a change of scenery from my wee flat's four walls.  I'm hoping to escape to the seaside to give my head a bit of space, have the sea air blow out some cob webs and do some much neglected writing early in September.

With our South African adventure cancelled, globetrotting buddy Vicki and I have planned a restrained but decadent staycation.  At the end of September we're going to head down to Cornwall with four nights near Penzance and four nights near Padstow.  We've got enough on the list to fill 10 days but if you have any recommendations, please share and we'll see if we can squeeze them in!
